May 17-19, 2022, Herr Foods, from Nottingham, Pennsylvania, participated in Food Export-Northeast’s Food Show PLUS!™ at Expo ANTAD & Alimentaria during the show in Guadalajara, Mexico. Having exhibited at ANTAD for twelve editions, Herr Foods launched their new product, Cheese Curls, at the show and achieved $300,000 in sales.

As a result of participation in Food Export’s Food Show PLUS!™ services during ANTAD, Herr Foods met with 30 foreign contacts from Latin America.  In addition, Herr Foods’ Cheese Curl barrels can now be found at any City Club store throughout Mexico.  The company also projects $200,000 more in sales over the next twelve months. For ANTAD 2023, Herr’s will be exhibiting with a new appointed distributor.

Mariel Orozco, International Sales Manager with Herr Foods, shared that persistence and patience have paid off.  Mariel added, “We are now looking forward to our investment return.  Importers also want to see that their company/product of interest is committed to the market.”

Food Export’s Food Show PLUS! Service helps U.S. suppliers while attending international trade shows get the most out of their attendance. Services range from pre-show invitations sent to buyers, show floor buyer introductions, marketing briefing seminars, arrangement of interpreters to assist companies on the show floor, retail tours in the international market, and on-site assistance from Food Export’s In-Market Representatives.

On August 8, 2022, Herr Foods participated in another Food Export activity and attended Food Export-Northeast’s Focused Trade Mission to Chile. This event was one of many missions that Herr Foods has attended since they started participating in Food Export programs in 2001 and their third trade mission to Chile since 2016.

During the trade mission, the company met with multiple buyers through pre-arranged meetings and had the opportunity to showcase its line of snack products. Three months after the mission, Herr Foods completed a sale of chips worth $26,000 to Chile. The Pennsylvanian supplier also projects to achieve $100,000 more in sales over the next twelve months.

Mariel Orozco said, “The transaction was fairly easy, as always Food Export’s help is greatly appreciated.” As a result, Herr Foods hopes to grow its audience in Chile and create a diverse profile of products for this audience.

Family-owned and operated since 1946, Herr Foods is a producer of snack foods in the retail sector, exporting to over 40 countries. Herr Foods began as a local Pennsylvania potato chip manufacturer, and they now also produce other snack products such as pretzels, kettle chips, corn chips, popcorn, and cheese curls for worldwide distribution.

Food Export uses funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) to help America’s small businesses increase their exports of food and agricultural products. As these exports increase, these small businesses are creating jobs and improving the strength and stability of our agricultural economy. Food Export-Midwest and Food Export-Northeast are non-profit organizations that work in collaboration with their member state departments of agriculture and the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service. They offer a wide range of programs and services that help boost America’s agricultural exports.

Southeast Asia has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for U.S. companies for many years. Indonesia is the fourth most populous nation in the world, with a population of approximately 273 million in 2022. The country is dominated by productive age (15 to 64 years) consumers, which account for 67.7% of the total population. These consumers are increasingly seeking new products with a focus on health and nutrition.

Indonesia’s middle-class is forecast to reach 135 million by 2030, further driving consumer demand while providing a significant opportunity for imported food and beverages. In 2021, Indonesia’s GDP reached US$1,185 billion and GDP per capita reached US$4,349.5 (est.). Growth of GDP was 5% in 2022 and forecasted at 5.2% in 2023.

The USDA’s Office of Foreign Agricultural Affairs (FAS), hereinafter referred to as “Post,” in Jakarta stated that in 2022 Indonesia’s agricultural imports reached US$24.4 billion, with a U.S. share (13%) at U$3.3 billion. Soybeans and wheat are the top imports from the United States. Consumer-oriented product imports totaled $7.6 billion in 2022, with a U.S. share (9%) at US$705 million. Edible fish and seafood products imports were US$457 million, with a U.S. share (6%) at US$29 million.

Top 10 growth products include dairy products, baked goods, baby food, confectionery, processed meat and seafood, savory snacks, sauces, dressings and condiments, sweet biscuits, snack bars and fruit snacks, and ice cream and frozen desserts.

Jumpstart Your Product Export Sales to Costa Rica

Costa Rica has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for U.S. companies for many years. This market has a stable democracy, predictable business climate, and economic growth fueled by a resurgent tourism industry. After record-setting exports in 2021, shipments of U.S. agricultural and related products to Costa Rica were 10% higher through October 2022, with growth in all major product categories.

Costa Rica is ranked #83 of the major economies of the world and is considered an upper middle-income country. There are numerous advantages for U.S. exporters of consumer-ready food products to the region. These include geographic proximity and lower duties for almost all agricultural products under the CAFTA-DR free trade agreement. As a strong tourism sector (domestic and international), Costa Rica also supports substantial foodservice opportunities for U.S. exporters.

Costa Rican consumers are health-conscious and open to new products. They are willing to make the switch to private label due to the balance of quality and price and the increased consumer awareness for value-added products. Furthermore, they prefer to purchase in-stores despite the expansion of e-commerce, buying both in bulk and in small volumes.

U.S. Food & Agricultural Product Imports to Costa Rica, By the Numbers

  • U.S. Consumer-Oriented Foods and Beverage Products – US$420 million (2022)
  • U.S. Processed Foods – US$320.8 million (2021)

The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for U.S. companies for many years. The United States has 8% market share and is the 3rd largest supplier.  Despite the high competition and the negative impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the UAE food sector, the region continues to present a great opportunity with a strong preference for U.S. food products.

The advantages for U.S. exporters of consumer ready food products to the region are numerous. There are also consistently low tariffs and relatively transparent import procedures.

Jumpstart Your Product Export Sales to Mexico

Mexico continues to be a strong and consistent market, representing one of the largest consumer markets in the world for U.S. agriculture products.  With the geographical advantage of a long land border and a Free Trade Agreement that has eliminated duties on all agricultural and food products, Mexico is a natural market for U.S. exporters.

The U.S. has a number of distinct advantages when it comes to exporting food products to Mexico. They are highly integrated economies and Mexican importers are familiar with U.S. business practices. Additionally, Mexican consumers recognize U.S. brands and labels and associate them with consistent quality and high value.

The U.S. is Mexico’s most important trading partner, and U.S.-based companies account for more than half of Mexico’s foreign investment. The U.S. is also the source of close to half of Mexican imports and the destination for over two-thirds of the country’s exports.

In the last 25 years, the U.S. has quintupled the number of agricultural products exported to Mexico, making it the second largest export market for the U.S. In the last five years there has been an average export growth of 22% and in 2022, the USA exported $29 billion, the highest amount since the USMCA (former NAFTA).

U.S. Food & Agricultural Product Imports to Mexico, by the numbers:

  • U.S. Consumer-Oriented Foods – US$11.4 billion (2022)
  • U.S. Processed Foods – US$5.2 billion (2022)
  • U.S. Bulk Foods – US$11.2 billion (2022)

Jumpstart Your Product Export Sales to South Korea

South Korea has proven to be an appealing and profitable market for U.S. companies for many years. USDA’s Agricultural Trade Office (ATO) in Seoul, reports that the U.S. is the leading exporter of agricultural products to Korea with a 24% market share. While total U.S. bulk agricultural exports to Korea dipped in 2019, exports of consumer-oriented products such as meat, dairy, and processed products continue to grow.

Despite escalated competition from export-oriented competitors, consumer-oriented American products continued to lead the expansion of the export market in Korea, which reflected Korean consumers’ increased demand for better value, quality and diversity. The Korea-United States Free Trade Agreement, (KORUS) implemented in 2012, coupled with on-going evolvement of the Korean food market, should generate greater export opportunities for American products in Korea in the coming years.

U.S. Food & Agricultural Product Imports to South Korea, By the Numbers

  • U.S. Consumer-Oriented Foods – US$4.7 billion (2020)
  • U.S. Processed Foods – US$2.9 billion (2020)
